Adjusting the Jitter buffer

If your audio sounds broken or choppy the problem can be fixed by adjusting the jitter buffer.

When you place a call over the Internet the connection will have some "jitter" caused by the data packets taking different lengths of time to reach their destination.

To eliminate this jitter, IP Phone Center uses a jitter buffer which holds the data for a small amount of time and smoothes out the data flow.

In some cases the Internet connection can be very jittery and the buffer is not large enough. In these cases you can adjust the jitter buffer to make it larger.

Updating the Config.ini file to adjust the jitter buffer setting

Close IP Phone Center by right clicking on the yellow phone icon in the tray and clicking exit.

Open Windows explorer and go to;

C:\Program Files\IP Phone Center

Right click on the file called config.ini or config (sort by name to make finding easier)

Select open with . . .

Choose notepad to open the file

; IMPORTANT do not change any values in this file.

[Override_Jitter_Control]
override = 0     ; default = 0 (disabled)
jitter = 100     ; in ms, default value = 100 normal range 100-500 ms

Change the override to 1

Increase the jitter setting (highlighted) by 100. (If set at 100 increase to 200).

     A setting of 500 will result in a longer delay, but better continuous sound quality.

     A setting of 100 will result in a shorter delay, but better real-time sound quality (less delay).

Save the file

Open IP Phone center and check to see if the problem is cured, if not then try increasing the jitter buffer by an additional 100mS. Note that a large jitter buffer will result increased delay.
